The Greater Cincinnati AWIS Outreach Committee’s priority is to design and run enrichment programs for the community kids and teens that will give them the opportunity to learn and think about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) in a unique way. Currently, the outreach committee manages two programs: Cincy SciGirls and Girls in Science.
Cincy SciGirls is composed of Saturday sessions full of fascinating hands-on experiments and interesting interactive lectures that allow our students, ages 9-12, to enjoy the world of science from a new and attracting perspective. Importantly, sessions will de held by experienced graduate level scientists, further providing an opportunity for mentorship from successful female scientists.
Girls in Science targets 6th-8th grade science classes and operates as an after-school program. Volunteer presenters are contacted by teachers via the GC AWIS website and coordinate program dates for the volunteer(s) to come to the school and give a one-hour hands-on lesson. Programs like this have been shown to improve retention of girls in science and technology (as seen here and here). To get involved with Girls in Science, click here.
If you are interested in volunteering to facilitate Cincy SciGirls sessions or as a presenter for the Girls in Science program, please contact our Outreach Chair, Bethany Hosford, at email@example.com!
